I haven’t always been great at goal setting. In fact, for most of my life I couldn’t say that I actually set goals. Sure I had ideas, thoughts, dreams, but that is all they every were – ideas, thoughts and dreams! There is no real magic behind having an idea or a dream unless you are willing to commit to it and put it to paper. Don’t worry – I have some tricks up my sleeve to help you with goal setting that I will be sharing later.
It was not surprising for me to learn that people that actually set goals are more successful. A Harvard Business study revealed 14% of people have unwritten goals in mind but only 3% have goals written down. The study concluded that the 14% who have unwritten goals are 10 times more successful than those without goals. The 3% with written goals are 3 times more successful than the 14% with unwritten goals. The bottom line is there is Science behind success and it begins with goal setting!
It can be a little overwhelming at first, but this is because people want to eat the whole sandwich in one bite. Success will come to those people that plan and persevere. Do yourself a favor – don’t let goal setting overwhelm you. Goal setting is essential to success!
I can tell you from personal experience the moment I truly took goal setting serious, I saw amazing changes in my results and my business. I promise – I was stuck, spinning my wheels and completely lacking direction before I finally jumped in and started getting serious about goal setting.
Here are 3 goal setting hacks to get you started
Create a vision of your future
I am sure at some point you have heard the quote: Proverbs 29:18 – Where there is no vision, the people perish. This is NOT wrong. Without a vision, you simply have no direction. You are just existing on a daily basis with no real long term plan. Vision gives you direction. It creates the map that features where you are and where you want to be. It provides focus and clarity.
When things get tough, having a vision that you are anchored to will really help you find your way. When writing your vision statement, try envisioning your ideal life and how you want to get there.
Positively Frame your goals
You might be wondering what in the world I mean by a positively framed goal, but it is simply defining your goal in positive terms. For example, instead of setting a goal of “Losing Weight” you want to set a goal that says “I want to become fit and healthy”. Another example, instead of “I want to pay off my debt” set a goal that says ” I want to be financially free and generous”.
It might seem like these are both saying the same thing, but the change in verbiage is KEY. positive terms. It is often difficult to know what we want. Negative experiences can dominate our thinking, and we end up focusing more on what we don’t want in life, than what we actually do want. This can be a huge hindrance which prevents us from moving forward. Keep your goals positive!
Chunk your goals – don’t try to eat the entire sandwich in one bite
Last, but not least is chunking your goals. Just like in Education when you “chunk” your lessons in bite size sections, you need to do the same for your goals. If you only set the goal “I want to have a successful business” it is likely you will have NO IDEA how to achieve this goal. It is too broad and you will likely get frustrated before you even get started.
Think of your goals in terms of short term, medium term and long term. You might have a goal that includes a successful business but in reality it takes MANY steps to get there. Think about what has to happen first and create those short term goals. Start with your long term goal and break it down into what you have to do to get there.
If your long term goal is to be Fit and Healthy – what is a realistic timeline? Will it take a year, 6 months, a few months? Lets say I want to be fit and healthy by the end of the year. What do I have to do to achieve this? Our medium term goal might be to Eat Plant based 70% each month and my short term goal would be to eat plant based Monday – Thursday. These short and medium term goals are always adjusting but moving you TOWARD that long term goal of being fit and healthy.
Of course we would need to set goals to help us keep up the fit end of the bargain, but hopefully you can see the magic in breaking them down. It might seem impossible to be fit and healthy by the end of the year if you don’t chunk it into smaller segments. Breaking it down just makes it more doable!
