Don’t enter the New Year without these New Year’s Resolutions that will change your year.
I will be honest, I am not a big believer in New Year’s Resolutions, but after last year, I realized I needed better strategies to have a successful year. Many of us were caught off guard by the challenges of last year and ended up stuck or paralyzed. I admit I spent some time in the quicksand but thankfully I did a pivot and ended up with my BEST YEAR EVER!
As I look back on my last 365 days, it is clear the habits I held that kept me stuck and the habits I created that made me successful. Going into a New Year, I want to shed the negative and accelerate the positive to make this year even better. I am excited to see where this year takes me.
So let me talk about some of the not so great habits I am changing for this year. You can call them New Year’s Resolutions, you can call them habits, you can call them strategies, whatever you call them – DO them!
New Year Resolutions I need to Improve on for this year
Prioritizing my health
I fell victim to bad eating habits and ditched the gym last year. I have always at least been good about exercise even if I struggled with food, but not last year. Not prioritizing my health is the one single limiting factor that I believe kept me from having an outstanding year. I had a great year, but it could have been better.
Lack of energy, struggles with depression were all rooted in this one shortfall. This year, I refuse to fall victim to this trap. I am determined to end this year with a smaller waistline and better health habits! Do whatever you can this year to make this stick if you struggle with your health!
Negative thoughts and complaining
If I had 3 wishes, one of them would be to replace my negative mindset with a positive mindset. I have an awful habit of always seeing the negative in a situation and taking it a step further and complaining about it. Honestly, I think I get it from my mother, but it can’t be her fault. I am in control of my own thoughts and tongue.
This one can be difficult to admit, after all, aren’t I supposed to be the PAWSITIVE Dog Mom? Well, the reason I coined this phrase was to try to remind me that I need to think positive in every situation. I realize I am a work in progress and I HAVE improved, but it is a long road.
Did you know that you CAN be successful with a negative mindset? I am living proof, but it horrifies me to think of what I am giving up by letting myself stay here. Where WOULD I have ended last year if I could have adjusted this? Top Priority for this year!
Don’t seek happiness
One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to NOT seek happiness. Yes – You read that correctly! You shouldn’t go out and SEEK Happiness! I can promise you that my own pursuit of happiness has continued to take me down roads that have trapped me for years.
Instead of trying to find happiness, this year I am going to live with passion, purpose and love – I trust everything will fall into place. Sometimes wanting something so badly will sabotage your success.
Show up everyday with passion and purpose and make decisions out of love. Success and I dare say happiness will follow!
New Year’s Resolutions that helped me fetch success last year!
At this point, you are probably thinking, didn’t she say she had a good year? YES – I did ! Let me talk about a few of the habits I was able to put in place last year that made a huge positive impact on my year!
Believe that success is POSSIBLE
If you would have told me at the beginning of last year that I would start a successful business during a pandemic I would have laughed and walked away. You see, I have failed so many times at starting a business that me being successful just seemed to be a joke. I traded my dreams for a paycheck and just assumed success was unobtainable for me.
Fortunately early last year, sometime changed and I believed 100% that I would be a success despite all of the other challenges. I have willed my mind to believe I can not fail. That is exactly what happens when you BELIEVE that you will be successful and put in the work. As my business grew, I began to invest in myself and my mindset. I think I can became I KNOW I can and eventually became I DID. You have to believe success is possible despite everything. YOU have to believe this!
Success doesn’t happen over night, trust the process
Another shift in mindset I achieved last year was the idea that success does not happen over night. When I first started my business it grew like crazy and it inspired me to work hard. However, after 6 months, when I went back to my full time job, the progress hit the wall and I was frustrated.
Even though the old me might have just walked away, I realized that I had to put in my time, show up everyday and success would happen. Guess what – IT DID! I achieved my goals, even though it took more time than I had originally planned, I trusted that if I just kept working hard it would happen and it did. Trust the process! Show up with passion, show up to help people, show up with love – success will find you! Make a New Year’s Resolutions to Trust the Process!
Invest in you
YOU are your greatest asset. I know it seems so odd to say it, but it is true! If you are not investing in you, then you are not building your greatest asset. As I built my business, I used the extra money to invest in courses that helped me improve skills, mindset and leadership.
I started reading books, working in mastermind groups, and surrounding myself with people that were successful. This changes everything. YOU have to invest in you and your future otherwise you will always be stuck! Sometimes you have to say YES to the dress or in my case – YES to that course or book.
Don’t be afraid to grow
You don’t have to make New Year’s Resolutions every year but you should aim for growth. Don’t be afraid to look back and admit something didn’t work well, just be willing to grow and change. I am not even close to perfect but being able to admit my areas for growth will make a huge positive impact on my life.
Take an honest assessment of yourself and decide to change one or two habits. It’s not magic, it takes time, but it will be worth the effort in the end! You will never be successful if you don’t adopt a growth mindset. Never give up growing, improving and changing no matter your age.
