If you are like me, you wish you could go on Amazon and buy a pocket interpreter so you can better communicate with your dog. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to talk to your dog, but you can watch for specific dog behaviors that might be a result of a specific condition that can be addressed with your pup. I am going to talk about 3 dog behaviors that you may be able to address with a natural home remedy. Make sure to check out my free guide in the resource library to help eliminate one of these below!

Dog Behavior 1 – Eating Poop

It is every dog mom’s worst nightmare, watching their sweet baby trot over and devour some steamy poop in the yard! UGGGGGGG! NO thanks! Why in the world do our pups eat poop anyway? There are different reasons for the fecal feasting, but one of the most likely culprits can be lack of a nutrient rich diet. If your pup is eating another dog’s poop or their own, this dog behavior may be corrected by getting them on a high quality probiotic.

Dog Behavior - Eat Poop

The poop eating can be a result of a high level of nutrients NOT being absorbed during digestion and so the poop simply is to irresistible to pass up. If you have two dogs, it is a good idea to make sure they are a high quality nutrient rich diet and a high quality probiotic. Making this change can often curve their taste for poop! Make sure you check out my article on probiotics!

Dog Behavior 2 – the head shake

An occasional head shake from your dog is not a big deal, but if the head shaking is consistent and frequent, it is worth a check. There are a variety of issues that can cause a dog’s ears to be irritated that will result in the head shake. Ear Mites, Ear Infections, Yeast, Irritants or even allergies can create the head shake of your dog.

Dog Behavior - Head Shake

If your dog is doing more head shaking than normal, it is a good idea to do a quick exam of the ears. If nothing is visible, try using a natural cleaner designed to help remove irritants such as water, grass, etc from the ears. Trapped water is often a cause of many of the dogs ear issues, especially for our floppy ear dogs. If your pups look red, swollen or you see any type of discoloration , it is best to have your vet check it out.

Dog Behavior 3 – the paw lick

The constant licking of the paws can be the most annoying of all of the behaviors! This is particularly true if your pup is licking while you are trying to sleep. There are a variety of reasons that a dog may lick it’s paws including allergies, dry skin, fleas or even anxiety! I have put together a cheat sheet in my resource library to help owners understand why dogs lick their paws and how you may be able to help eliminate the lick. You can snag it for free below!

Dog Behavior - Paw Lick

When should I contact the vet?

Eating poop, head shake and paw licking may just seem like annoying issues, but if you are unable to improve these symptoms using natural remedies, always check in with your vet. Most often dog behaviors can be just symptoms of underlying issues that could be serious. I love to try to eliminate my dog’s issues with holistic remedies first, but my motto is when in doubt, have the vet check it out! This is especially true if the issues do not improve after a period of time. I hope these tips help you out next time Fido is trying to tell you something with these behaviors!
