Healthy treats for dogs – click, order, receive!
I am always looking for healthy treats for dogs. As a dog mom, we absolutely want the best for pets. Most of us spend hours online researching the best of the dog foods, vaccines, medications, training methods, dog shampoos, vets and anything else our furry friend might need. When it comes to healthy treats for dogs, do you do your homework?
If you are a vigilant dog mom, this interview is for you. I am going to introduce you to someone who change how you feel about healthy treats for dog. I hope you enjoy my interview with Katy P of Susie’s Scrumptious Snacks. She specializes in healthy treats for dogs!
CDT: How did you get started in the dog snack business?Β There are a few reasons I started Susie’s Snacks, but the main reason was I was tired of going to the store and not being able to find treats for Susie (our corgi) that weren’t just packed full of crap. So after brainstorming with my mom who is a former (people) caterer and test kitchening several ideas, we found that we could just make our own snacks that Susie not only loved but also were great for her too! It was important for me to create healthy treats for dogs!
CDT: What was your first product? Oh man… Um… you’re asking me to reach waayyyyyy back in to my memory… I believe the first 5 flavors we started with were Peanut Butter Banana, Peanut Butter Parsley, Peanut Butter Oat, Gingerbread and Sweet Potato (and 4 out of the 5 original flavors still exist in our lineup!)
CDT: How did you come up with your name? Referring back to question 1… Our corgi’s name was Susie and the inspiration for this whole business! She was our CFO (Chief Food Officer) and of course Quality Control! CDT – We have one of those. Everything must go to the LAB for testing π The lab being Biscuit!
CDT: What is your most popular product? Oh that’s a tough one… I would have to say it’s a three way tie between the Peanut Butter Banana Cookie, the Turkey PUP-eroni Pizzas and of course the infamous smoked Chicken Feet.
CDT: Without giving away your secrets, how do you make your snacks? We only use human grade and as much as possible, locally sourced ingredients. (pssst – her snacks are amazing ways to get healthy treat for dogs delivered to your house!)
CDT: What are you most proud of as a small business owner? I’m proud of the brand we’ve built and the fact that people trust us with one of their most precious family members… their pups!
CDT: What snacks would you recommend to your clients? Depends on what the customer is looking for… For our super chewers we recommend our grass fed smoked beef bones because unlike your store bought bones, we do not bake or dehydrate our bones, we only smoke them. Smoking is a wet heat so it keeps the moisture in the product making our bones MUCH less likely to splinter.
For our older pups, we’ve got the smoked chicken feet. Why chicken feet you ask? Fun fact, chicken feet are one of the MOST natural forms of glucosamine we can give our pups. Really any fowl foot (chicken, duck, turkey) have it but chicken is the most readily available. Each foot is equivalent to about 450mg of glucosamine and as the good Texans we are, we went the extra step to smoke them vs most places just bake or dehydrate them. All dogs are prone to having hip and joint issues at some point in their life, and chicken feet are just a great way to alleviate or stave off those problems. These are great healthy treats for dogs!
CDT: Why should people buy your product instead of big box store products? These days it is just SO important for us to know where our food is being sourced from and the same goes for our pups! There are wayyyyy too many horror stories about bad pet products coming out of China and such so knowing that your pups food and snacks are being sourced right here in the USA is just an added level of comfort.
CDT: Where is your store located? Our retail store is located at 507 S. Locust Street in Denton, TX, just three blocks south of the Denton Square. And then you can find us pretty much all over the metroplex at markets, events and festivals! Check out our Facebook page or visit www.susiessnacks.com to check out where we’ll be next!
CDT: If we canβt make it to your denton store, how can we get your snacks? Come visit us at a festival, market or event near you OR visit our website, www.susiessnacks.com where you can order online and have delivered directly to your doorstep!
CDT: Have you ever thought about having a contest to create a new product ( similar to what Frito Lay does each year with the chips) Winner gets to name it π I haven’t! But it’s a really good idea and now you’ve got me thinkin’ π
CDT: What else would you like to share with our blog? While our name makes it seem we’re all about the snacks, we actually offer so much more! We also have our own private label dog kibble that has locally sourced ingredients and is milled right here in North Texas! So it never sits in a warehouse or on a truck, it is literally milled and then brought straight to the store for your pups to enjoy! We also do puppy cakes! If your pup has a birthday or a gotcha day coming up, think of Susie’s Snacks to help make a cake to make the occasion that much more special π
