It’s time to be honest with yourself, quitting your job may be the most important decision you can make.

Should I quit my job? If you coach people in any capacity, this will be the number one question that you hear from your clients. If you are open, I invite you to read about my experience with leaving careers and how I can help you answer this question if you are struggling with it.

Been there – Done That

It wasn’t very long ago that I spent hours and hours agonizing over this same decision for myself, should I quit my job teaching. Despite the fact that I am designed to really make decisions on my own, I found myself desperate to discuss it with people. Looking back on the situation, I really just wanted some validation. For me to even consider quitting a career I spent years preparing for only to leave after a few years seemed crazy.

That feeling of failure started looming over me again like a heavy cloud. I felt trapped. I could try to stay in a job I just didn’t like that was making me miserable or I could risk total failure again by walking away from a job with decent pay, security and benefits. Ironically, this was not the first time I had been in this position. Years ago I was working in a job that just wasn’t working for me, I was miserable, but I refused to quit for a variety of reasons. Without a doubt, money and security were at the top of the list of reasons that kept me going to a job I hated. In the end, it was a very difficult lesson to learn and a very miserable experience.

Finding peace in my design

Thankfully, I have changed a great deal since that first experience. I have learned to honor my design and my feelings. I also understand through my education in Human Design that I am prone to stay in situations that no longer serve me because of fear that comes with my genetic engineering. Despite the fact that I did struggle to make the decision, I had learned that quitting my teaching job was the best decision I could make.

I realized that thoughts that I would be a failure because teaching was “not for me” were unfounded and straight out of my head. Our minds will go to great lengths to override what we KNOW is best if we let it. Ultimately my mind would just hold me hostage in fear until there were no other options but to quit, just like the first time around. This time I was not going to be trapped by this fear, I made the decision to quit my job.

I wish I could tell you that I had this huge master plan when I quit, but the truth is, I did not. I was making some money from my small business, certainly not enough to pay my bills, but I had to trust that the universe would provide for me and that is exactly what happened. Don’t get me wrong, it is not like checks started showing up in my bank, but every time I really needed it, the right opportunity came along for me.

I have not completely replaced my teaching salary yet, but I have really had an opportunity to start to work on projects that I am passionate about and that are aligned with my design. I absolutely believe if you can find your passion and what drives you, you will never “work” another day in your life. In time, the finances and support will follow. In addition, I do believe that working with your own design will completely change your life.

Do what you love and love what you do

Looking back on my career, with every job that I absolutely loved two things were true. I was doing work aligned with my own design and I was doing work that aligned with my passion. Sadly, when I was younger, I didn’t understand that either of these were important, I was off chasing money.

I once had a manager tell me that if I would just focused on working in a field that I was passionate about that I would change the world. I think it was her gentle way of telling me I was in the wrong career, but since I didn’t care for her and I was a prisoner to fear, I never really heard that message. It has taken me YEARS to appreciate and value that advice. Despite my desperate attempts to hold on, I soon discovered the universe will EVENTUALLY move you forward even if we fight to hold on to what no longer serves us.

Should I quit my job?

So, what do I tell clients that ask me if they should quit their job? That is a difficult question to answer because it is going to be different for everyone. I will always start by looking at their specific design.

Everyone is designed to make decisions differently so I always want to honor their decision making strategy first. In addition, not everyone is going to have the luxury to just “quit”. If quitting is the right decision, it might be time to start working on an exit strategy. At the end of the day, the decision is up to you, I am just here to help guide you to the BEST decision you can make for yourself.

As a projector, I have a beautiful gift of being able to see things differently than most people. We are at our best when we are guiding and helping people understand how to best use their energy and this makes us natural coaches and guides. I want people to really be able to understand who they are designed to be, connect with their passions and live a life that brings them joy. When people live their designs and connect with their passions, the world becomes magical for everyone. It’s time to be honest with yourself, quitting your job may be the most important decision you can make.

Oh I can relate too. I had spent countless days thinking about this choice over and over, and I’m starting to learn that perhaps I’m not made for the 9–5, but that was only possible to learn by making the decisions in the first place. Anyway, thanks for this post!

I totally understand this and do believe that many of us are NOT designed for the 9-5 rat race, but it is difficult to do something different when everyone tells us what should be normal!
