The Houston Dog Mom: How to Manage Fireworks Anxiety
Pet Fireworks Anxiety β How to Calm the Anxious Dog.
Like many dog owners, the 4th of July and New Yearβs Eve are times of celebration but also stress. Stress because I know my dogs are going to panic over the fireworks.
Douglas (11 year old blue heeler) will pant and eye roll. Tammy (6 year old black mouth cur) will bark incessantly. The nerve of those bang bang noises! Sheβll show them!
Since the dogpocalypse is very real for my dogs, Iβve focused on what I can do to relieve my dogβs anxiety. Here are some tips
How to manage fireworks anxiety
- Prepare in advance.Β Make sure you prepare ahead of time for the inevitable. Donβt realize at the last minute that you are out of your favorite soothing dog treats!
- A tired dog is a good dog. Take your dog to his or her favorite park, play fetch, or go for a long walk. Your dog will be in a more relaxed and happier frame of mind going into the evening.
- Keep your dog inside the house. Once the fireworks have started, keep your dog inside. If you need to take him/her out for a potty break, use a double leash, one on the collar, the other a slip lead. If fireworks go off when you are walking, you will want to make sure you have a solid hold on your dog.
- Donβt anticipate the problem. Yes, I said to prepare in advance. And now Iβm telling you not to anticipate the problem. What I mean is, donβt let your anxiety over the situation spill over to your dog. Your dog will be able to sense your anxiety and concern. Youβll end up triggering their anxiety.
- Get a dog sitter if you are going out.Β Just having someone at home with your dog does two things. First, it gives your dog some reassurance and companionship. Second, youβll be able to relax and enjoy yourself.
- Make sure your dog has tags on their collar. If your dog does happen to get loose, an ID tag (and preferably a microchip) will help to speed their return home.
- Set up a comfortable escape room/hiding spot.Β A closet with familiar blankets and bedding can be a welcome refuge.
- Work with your dog to reduce anxiety. Think βcognitive therapy for dogs.β Anxiety is something that can be trained away and managed. You can work with your dog to reduce their anxiety, whether itβs dog separation anxiety or dog fireworks anxiety.
- Here are a few suggestions for managing anxiety from the article: You can find it here:
If your dog is one that panics at thunderstorms and other loud noises, you may need additional help dealing with fireworks anxiety. Here are some options to try.
- Thundershirt.Β This helps to calm your dog by holding them closely and applying pressure. Itβs similar to the theory behind weighted blankets, or swaddling a baby (or a good solid hug!). Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS) relaxes the nervous system.
- Essential Oils. Lavender and other essential oils can be used in a diffuser. Be sure to use a version thatβs is labeled as safe for pets.
- Calming Treats. There are many calming treats for dogs that use hemp, L-Tryptophan and Melatonin. Pawtree offers a similar product calledΒ Chillax, that I highly recommend.
