Parvo? We had no idea what to do about Parvo ! Honestly, we weren’t even sure we going to keep the dogs. We just wanted to make sure they were OK. My husband had failed to tell me they had been “dumped” at our in the back of our truck, so I assumed we were dealing with lost puppies. Lets go back a bit —–
My husband woke me up early – before I was up to go to work and said he had found two little pups. It was raining outside – and cold – It was February 2nd. (Super Bowl Weekend) Honestly I believe we were both working that day so we locked them in the garage until we came home. I contacted the local animal control and shelter but no dogs had been reported missing. We canvased the neighborhood and no one had ever seen these two little girls. I had no idea they had been abandoned. When we called animal control, they told us that we had to keep them over the weekend since we lived in the country and they did not service our area on the weekend. As luck would have it, we were stuck with them a few days.
It didn’t take long for us to fall in love. By Saturday, we had the conversation about “could we or would we keep them”. By Sunday morning, things took a drastic turn, when we walked into the garage to check on the “girls”, we smelled something very foul. Both girls had been throwing up with bloody diarrhea. I knew something very bad was wrong with this precious little girls so I told my husband, our dogs or not, they needed to see a vet so we looked up a vet online and off we went first thing Sunday morning.
We arrived at the Denton Emergency Vet. When we described the symptoms, the vet immediately asked about our bank account. This was not a good start – The vet told us they were 99% sure they had Parvo but they would do a test to be sure – so we sat down and waited. We were in the age of the beginning of smart phones so I tried to look up Parvo. The resources were scarce, but did did see a very high mortality rate listed. Soon after the vet confirmed – Both of those sweet puppies have Parvo. It was at this time my husband admitted they had both been put in the back of his truck – they had been left with us to die.
Now we really had a decision to make. If we decided to give them up to animal control, they would just euthanize them. They had NO chance. If we decided we wanted to keep them, we would spend a fortune trying to save them with no guarantee they would survive. We were their only hope………….
