Hoe Cake: A delicious southern dish that cooks like cornbread
but taste like a biscuit

Hoe Cake
Me and Nana

A warm delicious Hoe Cake is cornerstone of my childhood memories. Every time I visited my precious Nana, she would cook these for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Everyone in my family has a love for Hoe Cake. The taste, the smell, the appearance of a Hoe Cake takes me back to spending time with my Nana.

If you look up Hoe Cake on the internet, they are usually more of a corn cake. It is thought that they created by early pioneers. They received their name by how they were cooked. These cakes were cooked over an open flame on the flat of a garden hoe – hence the name hoe cake!

Me, my Cousin and my Nana
on her 90th Birthday

Instead of corn meal, our family creates a hoe cake that is more like a standard biscuit. It is light, fluffy and has a delicious crispy crust like a corn bread.

Since my Nana never cooked with a recipe, it took me years to duplicate the hoe cake recipe that she made for all of her family.

Of course Biscuit loves the Hoe Cake too but it is not a great healthy recipe for our pups. I am going to spend some time creating something similar that my pups can enjoy, but a with a healthy pup twist.

This recipe is best cooked with a cast iron skillet and served warm! Serve with any dish that you love with biscuits. I hope you enjoy!

Nana’s Hoe Cake

Pawsitive Dog Mom
The most amazing Biscuit you will ever eat. This recipe was made famous in my family by my Nana. All of my Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins grew up eating this delicious breakfast staple. I have so many amazing memories of the smell of hoe cake waking me up anytime I visited my Nana. Since there was never an actual written recipe, it has taken years for me to find that perfect combination to duplicate the beloved hoe cake.
