The most amazing Biscuit you will ever eat. This recipe was made famous in my family by my Nana. All of my Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins grew up eating this delicious breakfast staple. I have so many amazing memories of the smell of hoe cake waking me up anytime I visited my Nana. Since there was never an actual written recipe, it has taken years for me to find that perfect combination to duplicate the beloved hoe cake.
Add enough Vegetable Oil to cover the bottom and sides of your cast iron skillet
Add greased skillet to the oven WHILE it preheats (This allows for a amazing crispy crust)
Add Flour, Salt and Sugar to a mixing bowl
Mix dry ingredients lightly with a spoon
Cut in Shortening with Pastry Cutter or fork (Shortening should be the size of peas)
Add buttermilk and mix until wet dough forms ( do not overmix )
After oven is preheated, take out hot iron skillet and add dough
Cook for about 18 minutes until toothpick comes out clean
Turn oven to Broil for about 2 minutes to brown the top
Remove from oven and let cool for about 5 minutes
Turn over skillet and add to a plate - SERVE WARM and WITH LOVE!
Notes
A few of my pictures If you don't have an iron skillet, this is a great starter skillet. I love my pastry cutter when making this recipe, you can fetch one here!
